Questions
Which test is used for feline upper respiratory disease?
Calicivirus, herpesvirus, Mycoplasma felis, Chlamydia felis and Bordetella present identically. A single multi-target card or a laboratory panel resolves them in one sample instead of a sequence of single tests.
Is there a quantitative inflammation marker for cats?
Serum amyloid A. Feline C-reactive protein barely moves, so SAA is the feline equivalent of canine CRP and is read as a number on the immunofluorescence analyser.
Can feline and canine tests share one platform?
Yes. The isothermal dock, the real-time PCR analysers and the immunofluorescence reader all run both species; only the cards and kits differ.
At what age can a kitten be tested for FIV and FeLV?
FeLV antigen can be looked for at any age, because the antigen test does not depend on the kitten's own immune response. The FIV antibody test is different: a kitten can carry its mother's antibodies for several months, so a positive FIV antibody result before about six months of age has to be repeated later or resolved by PCR on proviral DNA. Shelters and catteries that test whole litters on intake run the FIV Ab / FeLV Ag combo cassette first and keep the FIV / FeLV real-time PCR kit for the kittens that come back positive.
What is the difference between a toxoplasma IgG and an IgM test, and what does a positive IgG mean?
IgM antibodies rise first and fall within weeks, so IgM points to a recent or active infection. IgG rises later and stays for years, so a positive IgG means the cat has met Toxoplasma gondii at some point; in a healthy adult cat that is common and is not, on its own, a diagnosis. What separates past exposure from current infection is either paired samples two to three weeks apart or a test that looks for the parasite's DNA rather than its antibodies: a Toxoplasma gondii real-time PCR kit, or the chairside isothermal card read in about 30 minutes. The IgG combo cassettes report toxoplasma alongside the other feline targets from one drop of blood in 10 to 15 minutes.
